INDIANAPOLIS - Stanford finished seventh overall at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships as the three-day event wrapped up Saturday evening at the IU Natatorium. With 282 points, the Cardinal finished in the top 10 at the national meet for the 32nd straight season.
Michigan scored 480 points to outlast defending champion Cal (406.5) for this year's title. Arizona (313.5) was third and USC (289) took fourth, earning one more point than Texas (288) and two and a half more than Florida (285.5). Despite two relay disqualifications, Stanford earned a top-10 finish.
Kristian Ipsen was named NCAA Diver of the Year after winning the springboard events. Ipsen (1-meter, 3-meter) was one of two Cardinal to earn two titles at the meet, joining sophomore classmate David Nolan (200 IM, 100 back) in that elite company.
Going for the sweep of each of the three diving events, Ipsen took second in the platform with 452.90 points. Duke's Nick McCrory (495.20) won the event.
Ipsen rebounded from a 410.90 in the prelims to move ahead two spots for silver. Ipsen was flanked by Taylor Sishc's 272.75 points for 16th. Sishc posted a 340.35 in the prelims.
The Cardinal diving corps made it a no-brainer for the committee to name head coach Rick Schavone the NCAA Diving Coach of the Year.
Drew Cosgarea (14:56.24). Bryan Offutt (15:19.68) was 35th.
Nolan went 1:40.82 in the 200 back prelims and was narrowly defeated in the finals by Andrew Teduits (1:38.27) of Wisconsin. Nolan touched in 1:39.31 for second.
Nolan was joined in the top eight by seventh-place Matthew Swantson (1:41.53). Swanston went 1:41.09 in the prelims. Matt Thompson followed his 1:41.73 prelim swim with a 1:42.01 for 14th in the finals.
Will Gunderson (1:44.14) was 34th.
Aaron Wayne scorched through the 100 free prelims in 42.26 and went 42.52 for sixth in the finals for an All-America citation. Andrew Saeta's 43.30 in the prelims was good for 22nd overall.
Mack Montgomery (1:45.27) was 16th in the evening session. Gray Umbach (1:44.37) was 20th and Jack Lane (1:45.11) was 28th as Chris Pickard (1:46.20) took 35th.
Stanford closed the meet with its 400 free relay quarter going 2:51.16 for fifth. Nolan, Wayne, Kremer and Saeta comprised the All-American grouping.
