FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - David Nolan defended his 200 individual medley title and Stanford held its ground in second place during day two of the Pac-12 Conference Men's Swimming Championships at the King County Aquatic Center. Nolan, the 2012 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, went 1:42.41 for an NCAA A-cut Monday evening and was one of six Cardinal to finish among the event's top nine.
Stanford has 278 overall points and trails only Cal (298.5) heading into day three of the league meet.
"Today's morning session certainly had some highlights, but not enough. We raced well tonight and will have one of our best sessions tomorrow morning," Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming Ted Knapp said. "David's swims tonight were a very good indicator for the rest of this meet and the NCAA Championships."
The meet continues with Tuesday's preliminaries at 11 a.m. (PT). The finals for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay kick off at 6 p.m.
Stanford dominated the 200 IM behind Nolan's output along with the efforts of fifth-place Will Gunderson (1:45.68), sixth-place Matt Thompson (1:45.87), eighth-place Jack Lane (1:45.99) and ninth-place Tom Kremer (1:45.37).
Drew Cosgarea went 4:18.81 in the 500 free for fourth with Danny Thomson taking sixth in 4:21.25. Bryan Offutt (4:21.40) scored 12th-place points for the Cardinal.
Andrew Saeta's 19.96 in the 50 free gave him a seventh-place finish as Aaron Wayne (20.07) was 12th in the race.
Ending the night in the 200 free relay was the quartet of Nolan, Wayne, Lane and Saeta. The squad streamed through with an NCAA A-cut 1:17.97 for third place.
