David Kelly, who was named Stanford's Associate Head Coach and Wide ReceiversCoach on January 22, 2002, will take over as the team's offensive coordinatorfor the 2003 season.
A native of Union, South Carolina, Kelly has earned a reputation as one the topcoaches and recruiters in college football. He brings with him over 20 years ofcoaching experience.
Prior to his arrival at Stanford, Kelly was the wide receivers coach under GeorgeO'Leary at Georgia Tech for two seasons (2000-01). He and fellow Cardinalcoach Peter McCarty were both members of the Yellow Jacket's staff when GeorgiaTech beat Stanford 24-14 in the 2001 Seattle Bowl.
Kelly's career includes 13 years on the high school level, 10 as a head coach,and 10 on the NCAA Division I level at such national powers as Georgia, LSU andGeorgia Tech. He has coached 14 players who have gone on to the National FootballLeague.
While at Georgia Tech, Kelly put together one of the finest receiving corps inthe Atlantic Coast Conference. One of his pupils, Kelly Campbell, broke all ofTech's career receiving records and was named All-ACC on three occasions.In 2001, Kelly's receiving corps helped the Yellow Jackets lead the ACC inpassing. Two of Kelly's receivers had more than 50 receptions during theseason while two others had more than 40. The Yellow Jacket receiving corps wasrecognized as one of the best in college football in 2001.
Prior to joining the Tech staff, Kelly coached tight ends and wide receivers atLSU for four years (1996-99). Two of Kelly's top pupils at LSU included widereceiver Josh Reed and tight end David LaFleur, who was a first round draft pickby the Dallas Cowboys in 1997.
After a 13-year career at Dunwoody High School (1981-93) in suburban Atlanta,Kelly was named running backs coach at Georgia in 1994. In two seasons with theBulldogs, Kelly tutored future NFL greats Terrell Davis, Robert Edwards and HinesWard and Larry Bowie.
Kelly was an assistant coach at Dunwoody HS from '81-83 before taking overthe head coaching reigns from '84-93. He was named the state high schoolCoach of the Year by the State of Georgia Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Journal-Constitutionand the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association after leading his 1993 team to aperfect 15-0 record, the Georgia AAAA state championship and a final nationalranking of No. 3 by USA Today. During his 10-year run as the head coach, Kellycompiled a record of 80-36-1, which included the '93 state title and threeregional championships.
Dunwoody's top running back, Rod Perrymond, was named the Georgia AAAA OffensivePlayer of the Year and its top defensive lineman, Travis Stroud, was named theNational Defensive Player of the Year. He also coached Harris Barton, a futurefirst round NFL Draft pick, while at Dunwoody.
Kelly began his coaching career as a graduate assistantat his alma mater, Furman, in 1979-80. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1979in education and a master's in education in 1981. He was a four-year letterwinnerat Furman.
