Seasons at Stanford: 2005-08
At Stanford: Palo Alto native enjoyed an excellent four-year career on The Farm, after growing up attending Stanford games at Sunken Diamond...crossed El Camino Real after a prep career at Palo Alto High School, and became one of the Cardinal's most dependable relievers...fashioned a 9-7 record with 10 saves and a 4.74 ERA (80er, 152.0ip) in 69 games (seven starts)...struck out 116 batters in 152.0 innings of work, against only 61 walks...with 31 appearances in 2007, ranks tied for fifth in Stanford's all-time single-season annals...his seven saves in 2007 and 10 career saves are both just outside the school top-10 lists...retired four of the five batters he faced over 1.1 scoreless innings in the NCAA Tournament...excellent student was a two-time first team Pac-10 All-Academic selection (2007 and 2008)...also earned a spot on ESPN the Magazine's District 8 All-Academic first team in 2008.
As a Senior in 2008: Was an invaluable piece of Stanford's College World Series staff, making 19 appearances (two starts)...ranked second on the team with two saves, while going 3-1 with a 5.23 ERA (25er, 43.0ip)...was given the club's Bruce R. Cameron Memorial Award, given annually to the Stanford player with outstanding proficiency in baseball, leadership and academic performance...made six relief appearances in Pac-10 play, going 1-0 with a 4.00 ERA (8er, 18.0ip)...saved the Cardinal staff on numerous occasions with excellent efforts in a long-relief role...10 of his 17 relief appearances were longer than 1.0 inning...worked between 2.0-3.0 innings in five outings, 4.0 frames in a pair of contests and at least 6.0 innings in two efforts...earned saves in each of his first two outings, February 23 vs. Nebraska and February 26 vs. Nevada...entered with a 4-3 lead against the Wolf Pack, and tossed 4.0 shutout innings (4h,0bb,3so)...worked a season-high 6.1 innings April 4 vs. Arizona State (4h,2r,2er,4bb,2so)...earned wins April 18 at UCLA, April 21 at Santa Clara and May 12 vs. Santa Clara...tossed a combined 9.0-scoreless innings (8h,3bb,6so) in those three outings, including 4.0 shutout frames in the April 21 contest (2h,0bb,1so)...made one postseason appearance, working 0.1 scoreless inning (0h,1bb,0so) in a June 21 College World Series game vs. Georgia...was a first team Pac-10 All-Academic selection.
As a Junior in 2007: Led Stanford with 31 outings (one start) and seven saves, while going 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA (32er, 61.1ip)...appearances tied for fifth on Stanford's all-time single-season list and the saves tied for 10th (since knocked out of the top-10)...tied for the Pac-10 lead in appearances, while ranking eighth in saves...got off to a fantastic start with six of his seven saves in the first month of the season, including a string of five in a row over five Stanford games from February 18-March 2...allowed just one earned run over 9.1 innings (0.96 ERA) during the stretch...had another very effective three-game stretch late in the season, when he did not allow an earned run in 14.1 innings from May 15-22...that run began when he tossed a career-high 7.0 innings in a May 15 relief effort at Santa Clara...picked up the win after holding the Broncos to one unearned run on seven hits (2bb,3so)...picked up a pair of prestigious academic awards, earning a spot on ESPN The Magazine's District 8 All-Academic First Team as well as picking up First Team Pac-10 All-Academic recognition.
As a Sophomore In 2006: Posted a 3-4 record with one save and a 4.34 ERA (23er, 47.2ip) in 19 games (four starts)...compiled 47 strikeouts in 47.2 innings, ranking second on the club with an average of 8.87 strikeouts per 9.0 frames...made his collegiate debut February 10 vs. Kansas...made his first career start February 21 vs. Nevada, and earned his first win with a stellar performance...faced the minimum 15 batters through the first 5.0 innings, before leaving in the sixth (5.1ip,3h,2r,1er,0bb,7so)...recorded a career-high eight strikeouts over 5.0 scoreless innings February 26 at Fresno State (4h,1bb)...earned a brief spot in the starting rotation but struggled for three starts (March 12-April 1) before being moved back to the bullpen for the remainder of the season and his final 12 appearances...picked up his first save in impressive fashion April 21 at Arizona, striking out five over 3.0 shutout frames (1h,1bb)...earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors and a spot on the College Baseball Foundation's honor roll for the first time in his career February 28, after going 2-0 with an 0.87 ERA and 15 strikeouts (just one walk) in 10.1 innings the previous week.
As A Freshman In 2005: Was a member of the team but did not see any game action...however, he was once penciled into the lineup as the designated hitter before he was pinch-hit for when his turn came up.
High School: Graduated in 2004 from Palo Alto (Calif.) High School, directly across El Camino Real from Stanford...was a two-time first-team All-League selection in the DeAnza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (2003 and 2004)...twice named honorable mention All-Central Coast Section (2003 and 2004)...compiled a 16-8 career record...tossed 85.2 innings with 101 strikeouts and posted a 1.71 ERA in his senior campaign...led his team to 2003 and 2004 SCVAL DeAnza Division second place finishes and the 2004 club to a runner-up showing at the Central Coast Section Division I Tournament...helped his team win the 2002 SCVAL El Camino Division title...was a National Merit Commended Scholar and earned Governor's Scholar recognition...coached by Peter Colombo.
Other Amateur Baseball: Played during the summer of 2007 with the Maxim Yankees, compiling a 3-1 record and two saves with a 2.13 ERA...struck out 36 batters in 42.1 innings pitched over nine appearances (six starts) for a team that was 32-16 and finished ninth at the NBC World Series...spent the summer of 2006 pitching for the Woodstock River Bandits of the Valley League for his second straight campaign, compiling a 2-1 record and a 2.77 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 39.0 innings over six starts...was 2-2 with a 4.55 ERA in 12 appearances (three starts) for the River Bandits in 2005, striking out 29 in 29.2 innings...spent the summer of 2004 playing with the ASA Titans...played with the West Bay Titans, along with Stanford teammate Erik Davis from 2001-03, helping the squad to a runner-up showing at the 2002 AAU National Championships followed by a seventh place finish in 2003...coached by David Salter during the summers from 2002-04.
Personal Information: Son of James and Nanette Stringer...has two sisters, Amy and Sarah...grandfather, Herbert Schulze, played polo for Stanford...chose Stanford because, in his words, "it is the perfect mix of athletics, academics, weather and location; plus, I grew up rooting for the Cardinal, and I want to be the one others can root for"...hobbies include jazz and classical trumpet, along with reading and baseball history...majored in mathematical and computational sciences.
