Now in his sixth year as an assistant coach for theCardinal, Michael Reilly has proven himself to bea valuable asset to the Stanford program. This seasonReilly serves as a coach for men’s cross country in thefall while working with the men’s middle distance anddistance runners in the winter and spring. In 2000,Reilly was named the NCAA West Regional CrossCountry Coach of the Year.
An outstanding student-athlete for Stanford from1988-93, Reilly’s knack for recognizing the challenges ofCardinal athletes on the field and in the classroom isunmatched. With Reilly’s help, Stanford is consistentlyselected as an Academic All-American squad in crosscountry while simultaneously achieving top NCAAteam honors as well. But it’s little wonder how Reillyknows what it takes to be a successful student-athlete.On his way to earning a Bachelor of Science inSymbolic Systems, Reilly was selected an Academic All-American by the United States Cross Country CoachesAssociation. He also scored at the Pac-10 Conferencemeet in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, an event in whichhe achieved a national ranking in 1993 and 1994.
Reilly’s duties away from coaching have moved theentire Stanford cross country/track & field program toa new level of prominence. He coordinates the recruitingof all men’s middle distance/distance runners,including the last four freshmen classes, which havebeen ranked number one in the nation by Track &Field News. Reilly is a prime player in the program’sfund raising efforts, which included coordinating theFriends of Stanford Track & Field.
Reilly has also made a name for himself as a homemeet director. Each year, Reilly oversees the StanfordInvitational in both cross country and track, whichattract a total of more than 7,000 athletes. ThroughReilly’s efforts Stanford hosts a series of high performancetrack meets each season, where top perfor-mancesare achieved, and Olympic medalists compete.In addition, Reilly has directed the Pac-10 CrossCountry Championships, the Pac-10 Track & FieldChampionships, the USATF Cross CountryChampionships (also the trials for the IAAF WorldChampionships) and the Peregrine Systems U.S. Open(an IAAF Grand Prix I Meet).
Reilly began his stint on the Stanford staff as theAdministrative Assistant to the Director of Track &Field in 1993. He moved from that position to anassistant coach for the Cardinal in January of 1997.
