Milt Nelms begins his second year as volunteer assistant coach with the Stanford women’s swimming and diving program. Nelms is a well-known expert on swimming technique and has spoken on the subject throughout the United States and internationally.
Nelms also has extensive coaching experience at the club level, having coached numerous top age-group swimmers with a focus in developmental swimming. His coaching experience includes stints with the Vancouver and Willamalane swim clubs (1989-96). He most recently coached for the Phillips Petroleum Company from 1996-2000.
Nelms has provided coaches education programs for USA Swimming and been one of the lead speakers for the last five National Age Group Coaches Conferences, speaking on swimming technique. He is also involved in a series of stroke videos currently being produced for and sold by USA Swimming.
From 1994-96, he was a member of the United States Swimming Board of Directors and was a recipient of the US Olympic Committee Sports Science Research Grant in 1994.
Among his current projects are collaboration and illustration efforts for two books about swimming technique.
Nelms studied at the University of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. He is single and resides in Palo Alto.
