Position:
Wide Receivers Coach
Year at Stanford:
Fifth

Now in his fifth year on the Farm, Mose Rison joined the Stanford coaching staff on March 6, 1995 as the team's wide receivers coach.

Rison spent five seasons (1990-94) as the wide receivers and tight ends coach at Rutgers University. He has also coached at the United States Naval Academy (1988-89) and Central Michigan University (1981-87).

During his first season at Stanford, one of Rison's pupils, Mark Harris, put together one of the finest seasons in school history. Under Rison's tutelage, Harris earned Second-Team All-Pac-10 honors after recording 57 receptions for 984 yards - the third highest receiving yardage total in Cardinal history.

In 1997, another Rison product, Troy Walters, set new Stanford records for season receptions (86) and season receiving yards (1,206). Walters' 86 receptions were the second most in Pacific-10 Conference history. Last season, wide receiver DeRonnie Pitts became the fourth receiver in school history to record over 1,000 receiving yards in a season (1,012) and his 74 receptions was the third best single season total in the Stanford record book.

A 1978 graduate of Central Michigan, Rison has earned the reputation as one of the top receivers coaches in college football. At Rutgers, he coached four consecutive All-Big East receivers, including two who have gone on to play in the National Football League: Chris Brantley and Mario Henry. In 1994, his last at Rutgers, two of Rison's pupils, Marco Battaglia and Reggie Funderburk, were first and second in the Big East in receptions.

Prior to his stint at Rutgers, where he coached with current Cardinal assistant coach Phil Zacharias for three seasons, Rison was the wide receivers and special teams coach at the United States Naval Academy for two years (1988-89). His first college coaching job was at his alma mater, Central Michigan, in 1981. He was a graduate assistant in '81 before becoming their wide receivers coach for the next six seasons (1982-87).

Rison, who received a master's in physical education from Central Michigan in 1983, was a standout running back for CMU from 1974-77. As a freshman, he helped Central finish 13-1 overall and win the NCAA Division II championship. CMU defeated Delaware 54-14 in 1974 in the Camellia Bowl for the national title. As a senior, Rison gained 1,283 yards and scored 12 touchdowns on his way to team MVP and Mid-American Conference honors. Rison's head coach at CMU was Roy Kramer, currently the Commissioner of the Southeast Conference. Rison earned a tryout with the Houston Oilers in the NFL and the Ottawa Roughriders in the Canadian Football League following his senior season.

After graduating from Central Michigan, Rison was a history and math teacher at Mt. Morris High School in Michigan from 1978-79. He also coached freshman basketball and junior varsity football at Mt. Morris. In 1980, he was the head freshman basketball coach at his alma mater, Flint Beecher High School.

Rison's cousin, Andre, is one of the top receivers in the NFL. He met his close friend, former all-pro linebacker Carl Banks, as a high school student at Flint Beecher. Rison's brother, Bryan, played basketball at Washington State under George Raveling.

Rison and his wife, Marilynn, have two children: Dominique and Tara.
