Player Bio: Wieslaw Kujda :: Crew

In his tenth year as head coach of Stanford Men’s Crew, Coach Kujda will be seeking a second consecutive trip to the IRA National Championships in 2000. Highly decorated as a coach and athlete, "Wies" brings to the Cardinal more than 30 years of rowing experience. Kujda was named coach of Stanford Men’s Crew in 1990. In 1993, his varsity eight placed second at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships and seventh at Nationals. Last year, his men’s varsity eight placed tenth at the IRA Nationals. In 1994, Kujda was named the Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year.
As a member of the Polish National Team from 1972-84, Kujda won ten national titles in single, double scull, pair and quad. In addition, he competed in seven World Championships, and placed sixth in double sculls at the 1980 Olympic Games. After immigrating to the United States in 1985, he coached at the University of Cincinnati, where his women’s lightweight won the 1989 National title. From 1985-90, he competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials and U.S. Nationals.
Kujda’s international coaching experience includes positions on the 1987 U.S. World Championship staff and the 1998 U.S. National Senior Team. During the summer of 1999, Kujda was an assistant coach for the gold medal-winning U.S. Pan American team. Kujda is a graduate of the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw with degrees in physical education, coaching and journalism. He resides in Redwood City with his wife, Katie and son Dobieslaw.
