Stanford University vs Cleveland State Post Game Quotes
March 22, 2008
Cleveland State
Coach Kate Peterson Abiad:
(Opening Statement) "We have been talking about how excited we were to be here. Certainly disappointed with the way we performed tonight especially with the way we shot the ball. We had been shooting the ball very well coming into this tournament. That could have changed some things for us if we had been able to hit some shots. In the big picture we have changed the face of Cleveland State Women’s Basketball. We have set a standard for future players that come to Cleveland State. I’m really proud of the effort our team put out on the floor and the journey that it took to get here."
(On guarding Jayne Appel)? "All year long people have talked about our size. Really this was the first game we were abused on the inside. We had not played against a post player of this caliber. When we got caught behind she scored. When we fronted her they could get passes inside and she scored. We did not have an answer for her. Unfortunately, on the offensive side of the floor we were not hitting shots. In the past, with post players who had been hurting us on the interior we have been able to take advantage of them on the defensive part of the floor. ? We forced other teams to make adjustments to defend us and tonight we weren’t hitting shots. They didn’t have to take Appel out of the game. They didn’t have to make adjustments defensively to match up with us."
(On disparity between free throws and fouls called)? "We are used to taking about 20-22 free throws a game. That has been a real emphasis for us this year. Kailey has gotten to the line the second most of anyone in our conference. If you notice we shot the ball 75 times tonight. Usually we don’t shoot that often because are getting to the free throw line. We shoot free throws fourth best in the country. I was a little bit puzzled on why we could not get to the free throw line. We really only got one free throw. The other came from a technical foul."?
Cleveland State Guard Kailey Klein:
(thoughts on early moments of the game) "I remember the first media time out we were really excited and we hit the first could shots and we were up. That was only 4 minutes into the game and we knew we had to keep on playing, unfortunately we got back on the floor and they hit some big shots and we couldn’t get anything to fall. But you know they are a great team and they are probably going to go a long way."
Cleveland State Forward Robyn Hoying:
(thoughts on senior year) "It is just a great experience for us. We talked about struggles we have had in the past. Lay it all out there on the line and playing our last game in the NCAA tournament it’s just a great experience. We played against a great team and I think in spurts we saw how we could play against a great team. The final score was not on our side but it is just great to go out that way, making it all the way."
