| Born Robert Lyman Templeton in 1897, he reached the Olympic Games with the rugby and track teams in 1920, finishing fourth in the long jump and joining the Americans and upsetting France to win the gold medal in rugby. He might have won another medal, in his best event, the high jump, but because he used the “western roll” that move was considered illegal at the time. In was Stanford's track coach from 1922 to 1939, winning the NCAA titles in 1925, 1928 and 1934, leading Stanford to 19 individual titles. Templeton coached Stanford to 12 top-five finishes at the NCAA Championships and 17 Stanford individual NCAA Champions during his career. He was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976. | |||||||||||
