Bob Garrett
Class: 1954
Sport: Football
Stanford: ---
A first team All-America selection in 1953, Bob “The Arm” Garrett was a brilliant two-way player who could seemingly play every position – quarterback, defensive back, placekicker and punter. His All-America honors in 1953 came at quarterback when he completed 118-of-205 passes for 1637 yards and 17 touchdowns. His 17 touchdowns in 1953 were a school record that stood until Jim Plunkett’s 20 in 1969, and his nine interceptions on defense tied a school record that still stands. He played all 60 minutes in five games in 1953, the last Stanford player to accomplish that feat. Garrett finished fifth in the 1953 Heisman Trophy voting and became the third person to receive the W.J. Voit Memorial Trophy as the outstanding football player on the West Coast. The MVP of the 1954 Hula Bowl, he was the No. 1 selection in the 1954 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.
