One of Stanford's first great divers, Gestring became the youngest Olympian to win a gold medal, at the 1936 Summer Olympiad in Berlin. She was one of Stanford's first female Olympic medalists. At 13 years and 268 days, she won the three-meter championship in 1936, but due to World War II, was unable to defend her title in either 1940, or 1944. She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1976 and passed away in 1992 at the age of 69.
