Stanford Cross Country Teams Set to Defend NCAA Titles

Stanford Story
The Cardinal seeks to repeat its championship effort of a year ago when Stanford competes at the 1997 NCAA Cross Country Championships ... Earlier this year (October 11), Stanford competed at the Pre-NCAA Invitational at Furman and came away with two victories ... The Cardinal men scored 43 points, 29 points ahead of Colorado ... Stanford placed three runners in the top ten ... Nathan Nutter finished third over 8,000 meters in a time of 24:19 ... Brad Hauser placed seventh in a time of 24:30 and Brent Hauser in eighth place at 24:34 ... The Stanford women easily defeated the field with 39 points, followed by Wiscosin with 89 ... Freshman Julia Stamps won the individual title over 5,000 meters in a time of 16:44 ... Three other Cardinal runners finished in the top nine ... Sarna Renfro placed fourth (17:12), Mary Cobb in eighth place (17:22) and Sally Glynn in ninth place (17:22) ... As a team in 1997, Stanford finished first in every race in which it ran its top team ... The Cardinal men captured first place honors in the Nevada Invitational (Sept. 6), the Stanford Invitational (Sept. 27), the Pre-NCAA Invitational (Oct. 11), the Pac-10 Championships (Nov. 1) and the NCAA District-8 Regionals (Nov. 15) ... Stanford will travel with eight men and eight women ... Traveling on the men's side to the NCAA's will be Jason Balkman, Brad Hauser, Brent Hauser, Jason Lunn, Chris Lundstrom, Nathan Nutter, Jonathon Riley and Jonathan Weldon ... Although the Cardinal men's team lost several key members from last year's team, Stanford is still a contender for the national title with young and veteran talent and depth ... Traveling on the women's team will be Mary Cobb, Kortney Dunscombe, Sally Glynn, Mary Huang, Sara Moore, Ann Ramsey, Sarna Renfro and Julia Stamps ... In short, the Cardinal women's team is loaded with talent, depth, youth and experience.

Last year, Stanford became the first school since 1985 to capture both the men's and women's NCAA titles ... Stanford was ranked #2 before the race ... The Cardinal men defeated 21 other teams, including heavily favorite and 1995 champion Arkansas, to capture the school's first NCAA title in men's cross country ... Stanford's previous high finish for men was second in 1972 ... Brad Hauser placed sixth over 10,000 meters in a time of 30:44 ... Brent Hauser was 14th in a time of 31:10, while Nathan Nutter was 15th at 31:11 ... All three gained All-America honors ... The Cardinal women captured the national title, the school's first women's title in cross country, defeating 21 other schools, including #1 ranked Villanova ... Stanford's previous best performances came in 1982, 1983 and 1984 when Stanford placed second.

The NCAA will conduct a pre-race press conference with several coaches and athletes competing in the meet on Sunday, November 23, at 1 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel (Dogwood Suite) in Greenville ... Stanford will be represented by Julia Stamps and Nathan Nutter and the Stanford coaching staff, led by Vin Lananna, Director of Track & Field and Cross Country.
