NCAA Women's Tennis Championships - Singles and Doubles
Semifinals
STANFORD, Calif. - At the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships, Stanford freshman Lilia Osterloh and Florida freshman M.C. White advanced to set up the first all-freshmen singles final in NCAA history.
In singles, No. 8 seed Osterloh upset No. 1 seed Karin Miller from Duke 6-2, 6-1 in an all-freshmen semifinal. Osterloh never let Miller into the match, breaking her serve in every game. "She was just better than I was today," Miller said of Osterloh. "I don't know if there was anything I could have done. She was just too powerful. I did everything I could."
In the other semifinal match, White also won in an upset, defeating Julie Scott of Stanford 7-5, 6-1. Scott was down 5-3 in the first set and fought off match point before coming back to tie the first set at 5-all. But White proved to be too powerful for Scott, taking the final two games of the first set before cruising to an easy win in the second set to take the match.
"I thought whoever got through the first set would have a big boost, because we've both had tough weeks," White said.
Scott was playing her 12th match in eight days, in both the team and individual competitions.
"The first set definitely took a lot out of me," said Scott. "There were a couple of points where it could have gone either way and if they'd gone my way I would have been a little bit more motivated for the second set."
White and Osterloh meet in the singles final at 4 p.m. on Friday.
In doubles, No. 1 seed and defending championship Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas of Florida defeated Zimpfer and Lucey of Wisconsin in one semifinal 6-3, 6-4. They will meet Georgia's Anderson/Catlin, the No. 3 seed, who defeated Stanford's Scott and Bleszynski, the No. 2 seed, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-1. The match will begin at approximately 6 p.m.
