Stanford Wins NCAA Championship

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Stanford women's tennis team snapped Florida's 62-match winning streak en route to winning the 1997 NCAA Championship. The win avenged last season's NCAA Championship match defeat, when the Gators defeated the Cardinal 5-2 to win the 1996 title. Florida also defeated Stanford 4-3 on Feb. 23 of this year, which was the Cardinal's only loss of the season.

Stanford clinched the match when No. 5 singles Julie Scott defeated Stephanie Nickitas in a hard fought 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-2 victory. The 1997 title is head coach Frank Brennan's ninth.

Stanford ends the season with a 30-1 record, while Florida falls to 31-1.
