Stanford Wins Men's Tennis Championship
LOS ANGELES - Stanford got wins from the Nos. 4, 5 and 6singles spots, collected the doubles point and then celebrated its 1997NCAA men's tennis championship victory over Georgia.
Stanford has now won three consecutive NCAA tennis titles for thesecond time in the last 10 years. Also, it is the sixth national titlethe Cardinal has won this year.
As it turned out, the top three singles slots were not completed, asthird-seeded Stanford already had an insurmountable 4-0 lead overfourth-seeded Georgia (23-4).
In addition, Stanford has become the first school ever to win sixNCAA team titles in the same year - men's and women's cross country,men's and women's volleyball and men's and women's tennis.
Paul Goldstein, Geoff Abrams and Grant Elliott were the singleswinners for the Cardinal (26-2).
The tandem of Goldstein and Ryan Wolters notched a 8-3 win, whileBob Bryan and Mike Bryan posted an 8-5 win in their doubles slot,ensuring the point for Stanford.
It is Stanford's 15th NCAA men's tennis team championship, whichties UCLA and USC for the most ever.
