STANFORD, Calif.--Stanford University men's soccer player A.J. Sauer was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player-of-the-Week for his efforts in leading the Cardinal to a 3-0-0 start, including winning the 13th annual UNLV/Coors Light Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
Sauer, a junior from Spring, Tex. (Klein Oak HS), got off to slow start in the season-opener at San Jose State but caught fire in the UNLV tourney, leading the Cardinal to a 2-0 mark and the tournament title. In the tourney opener against Cal State Northridge, Sauer got the Cardinal on the board in the 28th minute for a 1-0 lead. Holding the slim one goal lead seven minutes into the secon half, he connected again to give Stanford a little breathing room. The Cardinal went on to a 4-0 victory. In the final game of the tourney against the host Rebels, Sauer ended a defensive battle in the 80th minute with a game-winning, 10-foot goal from the middle. The win extended Stanford's win streak to eight games, dating back to last season. Sauer's three goals currently leads the MPSF Mountain Division.
