Stanford Head Coach Bobby Clark, Five Players Honored

Clark Captures MPSF Mountain Division Coach-of-the-Year Honors

The Stanford University men's soccer team placed three players on the 1997 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mountain Division Team, while head coach Bobby Clark claimed Mountain Division Coach-of-the-Year honors for the second consecutive year. In addition to the three players named to the team, two other Cardinal players were given honorable mention honors.

The players selected to the team include junior defender Jamie Clark (Hanover, WA/North Carolina), junior midfielder Simon Elliott and freshman goalkeeper Adam Zapala (Cupertino, CA/Bellarmine Prep). Zapala was the only freshman selected to the 11-man team. Garnering honorable mention honors were junior midfielder Shan Gaw (Olympia, WA/Capital HS) and junior forward A.J. Sauer (Spring, TX/Klein Oak HS).

Head coach Bobby Clark was named the MPSF Mountain Division Coach-of-the-Year for the second consecutive year, and the first outright. Clark led the Cardinal to a

13-5-2 mark, its first-ever Mountain Division title and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance in five years (1992). Last season, Clark shared the honor with Washington head coach Dean Wurzberger for his efforts in resurrecting the Stanford program, one which had failed to post a winning season in four years.
