Coach, do you approve of the new rule in which officials can use instantreplay in the last minute of the game? If you're going to do it then, why not throughout the game?
Coach VanDerveer: I do like it. It would be too cumbersome to use throughout the wholegame, but I think if it is going to determine the outcome, it would begood to use an instant replay.

What do you feel is the most difficult aspect to coaching?
Coach VanDerveer: Working with so many different individuals. Everyone has differentpersonalities, different motivations. It's putting the puzzle togetherall the time that is challenging.

Has a hyperbaric (?) chamber been considered as treatment for Jamie'sankles? Tim Young made a miraculous recovery from an ankle sprainthrough use of one of those devices: it belonged to the Sonics or TrailBlazers. GO CARDINAL!
Coach VanDerveer: Not that I know of, but thanks for the idea, and we should check it out.

Coach VanDerveer, the NCAA tournament is near and I wonder how you andyour coaching staff prepare for it. It is impossible to study for 15teams let alone 63 teams. So do you maintain a list of definite NCAAteams that you keep an eye on during the season? And when the selectionis announced, what and how do you prepare for your opponents? Thanks
Coach VanDerveer: We try to get as many tapes as we can on everybody, and then we focus onthe bracket we're in because we know that only one team will come out ofthe other three and that you have time to get ready for the other ones.Basically, you try to survive one game at a time.
Cheryl Kato (Fremont, CA)
I was wondering if you could tell me the reason for the rule changeduring freethrows. Why did they limit the number of people to 5?
Coach VanDerveer: I think it was trying to clean up the post play so there wasn't as muchjostling and possible fouling and to really be able to see if there areviolations. I think it's a good rule.
