Cardinal Prepares for Bears, Wildcats

This Week: Stanford (5-4) has won three-consecutive games and is looking to continue the streak as they face Bay Area rival California on Friday, January 9 at 7:30 pm in the Kaiser Arena in Oakland. On Monday, the Cardinal takes on No. 10 Arizona at 7:00 pm. The Wildcats are one of three Pac-10 teams ranked in the top-25 (Stanford and Washington are the others).

Stanford in the Rankings: Stanford is ranked 14th in the Associated Press Poll and 15th in the USA TOday/ESPN Coaches Poll. The Cardinal has been ranked in the AP Top 25 every week since the beginning of the 1987-88 season. Cal is not ranked in either poll and Arizona is 10th in the AP Poll and 10th in the coaches poll.

TV & Radio: The Stanford-Cal game will air locally in the Bay Area on Fox Sports Bay Area. Brian Webber and Betty Ann Boeving will call the game. Stanford-Arizona will be bradcast by Fox Sports Arizona only. Stanford games air live on KBPA 1220 AM and KZSU 90.1 FM. Dave Flemming handles the play-by-play duties, while Ray Salloom provides the color. Additionally, all Cardinal radio broadcasts can be heard on the world wide web via AudioNet. Inside Stanford Basketball with Tara VanDerveer can be heard on Monday nights on KBPA 1220 AM at 9:00 pm, with host Dave Flemming.

Head Coach Tara VanDerveer: Head Coach Tara VanDerveer returns to The Farm for a 12th season after leading the 1996-97 team to a third consecutive Final Four appearance. At Stanford, VanDerveer owns a 290-68 (.810) overall record and a 154-21 (.890) Pac-10 mark. In her 18 years of collegiate coaching, VanDerveer has accumulated an impressive 442-119 (.788) record. Three times each VanDerveer has collected National Coach of the Year and District Coach of the Year honors. VanDerveer was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career last season.

Roster Report: The Cardinal is still without Naomi Mulitauaopele. She had off-season surgery on her right knee and is still in rehab. Currently, she is listed week-to-week. Freshman Karesa Granderson has an injury to her right foot and could see playing time within the next 10 days to two weeks.

Scouting Report - California: The California Golden Bears bring a 5-7 overall record to this weekend's game at the Kaiser Arena in Oakland. In the Pac-10, Cal split games in the conference opening weekend, losing to Oregon, but rebounding to defeat Oregon State. On the season, the Bears are led by Masa Radovic, a freshman forward/guard from Belgrade, Yugoslavia. In the 12 games she's played and started in, Radovic is averaging 11.0 ppg and 3.0 rpg. Senior Amber Lacey leads the team on the glass with a 7.1 rpg average. In conference play, junior center Jennie Leander has stepped it up on the boards with an 8.0 rpg average in conference games and a 6.7 average in all 12 of the Bears' games. Marianne Stanley is in her second year at the helm of the Cal program. Stanley is the sixth-youngest coach to hit the 300-career victory plateau and with her 14th victory this season, she will become one of the youngest Division I coaches to achieve 400 career wins. In the series with Cal, Stanford holds a 26-14 advantage, dating back to the first meeting in 1974-75. The Cardinal has won the last eight games in the series.

Scouting Report - Arizona: The Arizona Wildcats enter the week with an 8-2 record overall and a 2-0 conference mark. Prior to facing the Cardinal on Monday, January 12 at 7:00 pm (MST), Arizona hosts Washington State on Thursday and No. 7 Washington on Saturday. Last week, Arizona had four road games, going 3-1 with the only loss coming against No. 4 Louisiana Tech in the final of the Louisiana Tech Dial Soap Classic. The Wildcats are led by senior forward Adia Barnes who is averaging a conference-leading 22.9 ppg while adding 7.1 rpg. Barnes was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week after averaging 26.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg and 2.0 spg in the Wildcats' four games. Head Coach Joan Bonvicini posted her 100th victory at the helm of the Arizona program against UCLA. In the series, Stanford holds a 27-6 advantage with the last Arizona victory coming in 1985-86, when Stanford lost to Arizona three times. The Cardinal and Wildcats are playing at this time due to the Pac-10/Big 12 Challenge which both teams will compete in January 31 in Lubbock, Texas.

Pac-10 Dominance: Stanford teams have dominated the Pac-10 for the last few years. Stanford is riding a 47-game conference winning streak, dating back to Feb. 9, 1995 when the Cardinal lost at Oregon State. Stanford has also won 60 consecutive Pac-10 games at Maples Pavilion. Since the first season of Pac-10 women's basketball in 1986-87, the Cardinal has finished nothing less than sixth and that was in the first conference season. Stanford has captured eight Pac-10 titles and was picked at the start of the season by the media to earn a repeat title this season.

In the Last Three: Stanford has won three consecutive games to put them over the .500 mark on the season, the first time the team has been in that situation in 1997-98. The Cardinal has improved in just about all fronts in the last three games compared to the first six. In the last three games (Colorado, Oregon State and Oregon), Stanford has out-scored their opponents by an average of 22 points, compared to out-scoring opponents by 1.4 points in the first six games. From the field, the Cardinal is shooting .547 in the last three games, while they shot .492 in the first six. One of the biggest improvements is on the boards, where Stanford has out rebounded opponents by an average of 16.7 per game in the last three instead of being out rebounded by 1 per game in the first six.

Outside Shooter: Vanessa Nygaard is one of the Cardinal's most consistent 3-point shooters. On the season, she is shooting .423 (22-52) from behind the arc, second on the team behind Regan Freuen, who is shooting .667 (8-12). Nygaard is fifth in the conference in 3-point percentage. Overall, she is averaging 15.7 ppg and 7.5 rpg, good for second and third on the team, respectively. She is one of the team's and conference's most consistent free-throw shooters, going 19-22 (.864) from the line, leading both the conference and the team. Nygaard tied her season-high 24 points against Illinois with the help of a 4-6 3-point performance. Nygaard also scored 24 points in the season-opener at Wisconsin. This season, Nygaard posted her 1,000 career point against Connecticut, now with a total of 1033 points, 20th all-time for Stanford players.

"O"ffense: Senior co-captain Olympia Scott continues to be a big contributor both in scoring and on the boards. Last week, against Oregon State and Oregon, she combined for 43 points and 24 rebounds, including a career high 16 rebounds against Oregon. Scott is averaging 8.6 rpg, good for the team lead and third in the conference. With 20.1 ppg, Scott leads the team and is fourth in the conference. Against Colorado, Scott set a new career high for points for the second time this season. Her previous career high was 31 points scored against USF, but her 33 points against Colorado set a new best. Scott was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for the first time in her career for her efforts against the Illini in December. With 1233 career points, Scott ranks 15th on Stanford's all-time list and is just 26 points away from passing Julie Zeilstra (1259) in 14th. In other Stanford categories, Scott has already jumped seven spots in rebounding this season, now with 627 career rebounds, seventh in Stanford history. Val Whiting heads up the all-time list with 1134 rebounds. Scott is a top-ten preseason Naismith candidate, as well as a preseason All-American by Street & Smith's and Athlon. Last season, Scott was an AP All-America Honorable Mention and a First-Team All-Pac-10 player.

Folkl Point: Junior Kristin Folkl rejoined the Stanford basketball team on December 26th after leading the women's volleyball team to a second consecutive NCAA Championship on December 20 , her third in four seasons on The Farm. Folkl has completed her eligibility in volleyball and has one year remaining after this season. After just two practices, Folkl played 24 minutes against Colorado, scoring 16 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. She also recorded two assists and a block. In her three games, Folkl has played a total of 67 minutes, averaging 14.7 ppg and 8.0 rpg. She recorded her first double-double of the season against Oregon State with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes. Folkl sprained her left thumb in her second practice and has played with it wrapped since then.
