UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Stanford men's gymnastics team finished second in its NCAA Championships preliminary round Friday night at Penn State and qualified for the team finals on Saturday.
Stanford tallied a 435.850 - its third-highest team score on the season - and had at least one gymnast finish in the top three in all six events. A total of 12 different Cardinal gymnasts recorded at least one top-10 finish.
After being named the Nissen-Emery Award winner Thursday night, Eddie Penev continued to impress in his senior campaign, claiming three individual victories.
Penev finished first in the all-around (87.450), floor (15.500) and vault (15.000). He also had strong performances in high bar where he finished tied for 10th with a 14.200 and parallel bars with a 14.400 to finish tied for 12th.
Stanford got off to a great start on vault with all five gymnasts scoring a 14.350 or higher and finishing with a team score of 73.600. Kevin Baker finished tied for third with a career-best 14.950 and Jonathan Deaton scored a 14.850 to tie his career high and finish fifth.
The Cardinal continued its hot start on parallel bars with Dennis Zaremski leading the way with a career-best 14.750 to tie for third. Cameron Foreman notched a 14.700 to tie for third, while Brian Knott finished eighth with a 14.650.
Along with Penev's 15.500 on floor, Sean Senters delivered a 15.150 to tie for third and Jordan Nolff earned a tie for seventh with a 14.800. Stanford finished floor with a 74.100 team score.
Stanford had a strong pommel horse rotation, earning a 71.300 team score. John Martin led Stanford with a 14.850 to tie for third, followed by Gabriel Alvarado in seventh with a 14.550.
The Cardinal finished the night on rings, where Zaremski continued to lead Stanford, posting a 15.300 to finish tied for second. Michael Levy scored a career-best 14.800 to finish 10th.
