New York Cosmos release

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's soccer defender Hunter Gorskie has been signed by the New York Cosmos, the club announced Friday.

The Cosmos, a reincarnation of the original North American Soccer League club that existed from 1971-85, will begin its inaugural season in the new NASL this fall.

Gorskie, a second-team All-Pac-12 selection as a senior in 2012, helped anchor a Cardinal back line that shut out six opponents and conceded just 23 goals over 18 matches. The Marlboro Township, N.J. native started all 18 matches as the Cardinal went 9-8-1 overall and finished third on the Pac-12 table with a 5-4-1 mark (16 points) in conference play.

Over his career on The Farm (2009-12), Gorskie appeared in 71 matches, scoring one goal despite spending his time primarily with defensive duties. As a freshman in 2009, he was part of a defense that allowed just 18 goals in 20 matches as the Cardinal advanced all the way to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
