STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 10 Stanford women's sand volleyball split its two matches, defeating Sacramento State 3-2 before falling to Saint Mary's 4-1, Sunday, at the Sacramento State Tournament held at the Sacramento Softball Complex in Sacramento, Calif. The Cardinal now stands at 2-1 on the season.
Stanford's No. 4 pair, Morgan Boukather and Megan McGehee, the No. 5 pair, also notched a win on the afternoon.
Against Sacramento State, Boukather and McGehee recorded the first win, defeating Kelsey Elston and Chelcy Motes, 21-17, 21-19. McGehee finished with 16 kills, nine digs and an ace, while Boukather added six kills, five digs and two aces.
Stanford took a 2-0 lead in the match as Ajanaku and Luck won in three sets over Lauren Aikels and Sloan Lovett, 21-23, 21-13, 16-14. Ajanaku was dominant against the Hornets, posting 20 kills, eight blocks, four digs and two aces. Luck played solid defense, tallying 18 digs while chipping in with six kills and four aces.
Bugg and Howard clinched the win for the Cardinal with a 17-21, 21-17, 17-15 victory in three sets. Howard registered 18 kills, 15 digs, six blocks and two aces, while Bugg posted 11 kills, 11 digs and three aces.
In Stanford's second match of the day, Ajanaku and Luck were the lone Cardinal pair to record a win. They defeated Natalie Loos and Milena Popovic, 21-15, 13-21, 15-11. Ajanaku finished with 14 kills, nine digs, three blocks and four aces. Luck recorded six kills, 14 digs and four aces.
Stanford will play its remaining five matches on The Farm. Up first, the Cardinal faces Santa Clara on Tuesday, April 9 at 3:30 p.m. Stanford defeated the Broncos 4-1 in its first match of the season.
