Cardinal Softblog: Bring Out the Brooms

May 6, 2013

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford outfielder Cassandra Roulund talks about the team's sweep over Cal in this edition of her blog. The sophomore will be blogging all season long to give Cardinal fans a behind-the-scenes look at the team.

GOOOOOOO STANFORD! (In the words of one of our biggest fans and loudest cheerleaders, Cliff)

This weekend we played at Cal and took our brooms with us! (I tried going for a joke here, because we swept them. But alas, it ended up sounding super cheesy... just roll with it). We added three W's to our record and it feels GREAT beating our rival from across the Bay.

This was my first experience playing in Berkeley and it definitely is different than any other travel weekend. Instead of trekking to the airport and staying in a hotel, we bussed back and forth everyday. It was actually kind of fun because we got to spend even more time with our favorite bus driver, Jim! HI JIM! Jim is great, he always roots us on and is honestly the best bus driver around. It was exciting to turn around and see him cheering us on from on top of the bus, behind the stadium!

Speaking of the stadium, Berkeley is really pretty! I feel like I mention how pretty other school's stadiums are, but it's true! (Of course, ours will always be the best). It's different than Stanford and very green and hilly. If you walk down the hill, away from the stadium, you can even see the Golden Gate Bridge!

Anyway, this weekend was also Kayla Bonstrom's birthday! HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY BONBON - May the 4th be with you! She was on fire, too - home run on her birthday and everything! Now that I mention it though, our entire team was on fire! It truly was a great weekend for everyone. We worked together and our offense came alive!

One of my favorite parts of anytime we travel is the food! Even though this trip was short, we still had loads of fun at the restaurants. JRich almost tried an Emu burger, but it was out of season... maybe next time? Jimmy showed us some fun doppelgangers of people on our team (absolutely hilarious!) and of course we also gave the coaches a hard time no matter where we were. For example, I don't know if you are all aware, but Coach Henderson is a gold medalist. (She is going to kill me for writing about her. Oh well, sacrifices must be made for hard-hitting journalism.) So whenever we're out in public, we make an effort to embarrass her by letting everyone know about her accomplishment! (Once, on a plane, we had the flight attendant announce it over the speakers.) This time, we were a little nicer and just shouted things like "wait, you're an Olympian?" or "there's our gold medalist!" until people looked. Can you really blame us? We're just proud!

We had a lovely weekend and plan to continue our winning streak this week and upcoming weekend! Come support us at home this Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday! (Seriously, you can take a picture with a gold medalist!) Saturday is also Senior Day so come help us celebrate them!

Inspirational Quote of the Week: "Good players create opportunities. The great players and the great people seize them." - Mia Hamm

Standout Teammate of the Week: Tegan Schmidt! She did an OUTSTANDING job with three doubles (if I remember correctly). One was almost a home run! SO close! Yeah, Schmidttle!

Peace, love, and cankles
