The Farm Report
No. 19 Stanford returns home to face No. 5 Oregon State in a three-game Pac-12 Conference baseball series this weekend at Sunken Diamond.
Stanford has lost five of its last eight but took two games last weekend from No. 8 Arizona State.
Oregon State (17-4) currently leads the Pac-12 standings with Stanford (11-10) sitting fifth. The Cardinal was the preseason favorite to win the 2013 league title.
Stanford, which has won five of its last six conference series, will be facing a top-10 opponent for the third straight weekend. This will be Stanford's fifth series overall against a top-25 opponent. The Cardinal lost two of three at No. 17 Rice, swept No. 22 Texas, won two of three against No. 17 Arizona, was swept at No. 7 Oregon and won two of three at No. 8 Arizona State.
Oregon State, which swept California in a three-game set last week, is riding a conference-best nine-game winning streak. Entering the week, Oregon State led the Pac-12 in ERA (1.97) and opposing batting average (.209) and turned a league-leading 49 double plays.
Senior RHP Mark Appel leads the league with 106 strikeouts. Appel, who has not allowed an earned run this season past the fifth inning, ranks fourth in the Pac-12 with a 1.56 ERA and boasts a .195 opposing batting average.
Appel is third among active NCAA pitchers with 357.2 innings pitched and tied for second with 348 career strikeouts. The strikeout total ranks third in program history behind Justin Wayne (1998-2000) and Kyle Peterson (1995-97), each of whom fanned 363 in their respective careers.
Cardinal pitchers have struck out 8.0 batters per nine innings, a figure that leads the conference and ranks 24th in the NCAA.
Senior DH Justin Ringo has posted quite an impressive line in 17 games from the leadoff spot: .403 BA, 25 R, 27 H, 5 HR, 20 RBI, .672 SLG, .487 OB, 5-5 SB.
Stanford will play two of its final three Pac-12 series at home, with the Oregon State and UCLA series sandwiched between a three-game set at Cal (May 17-19). The remaining midweek home affairs include matchups with Santa Clara (May 14) and Pacific (May 21).
Prior to Saturday's game, Stanford will recognize its 1967 College World Series squad.
One of the greatest collections of Stanford players was assembled when Dutch Fehring's club posted a 36-6-1 record in 1967, which still stands as the school's best single-season winning percentage (.849) in the modern era.
The 1967 squad laid claim to the best 20-game start in school history at 18-1-1 until the 1998 team matched the feat.
Stanford tied for third at the College World Series as first baseman and current head coach Mark Marquess (.404), as well as pitchers Sandy Vance (11-0), Don Rose (5-2) and Daro Quiring (5-2) led the way.
Vance later became a bonus baby with the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Rose pitched for the California Angels. Frank Duffy, Marquess and Michael Schomaker earned All-America honors.
