LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 13 Stanford softball team dropped a 7-1 decision at No. 16 Nebraska, Saturday, in the NCAA Lincoln Regional at Bowlin Stadium. The Cardinal falls to 38-20 overall, while the Huskers move to 42-13.
Senior pitcher Teagan Gerhart started the game in the circle and took the loss, dropping to 20-12. She gave up two runs on three hits in 1.0 innings. Freshman Kelsey Stevens entered the game in relief, giving up five runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. Nebraska's Tatum Edwards picked up the win, moving to 28-8.
Nebraska snagged an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after loading the bases with no outs. Designated player Courtney Breault hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Tatum Edwards.
The Huskers added to its lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single with the bases loaded by catcher Taylor Edwards.
Stanford cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Leah White hit an RBI single up the middle to score senior Tegan Schmidt from second.
Nebraska tacked on five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 7-1 lead. Tatum Edwards hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Mattie Fowler to start the rally. Taylor Edwards then hit an RBI single to centerfield, plating Jordan Bettiol. Breault hit a two-run single before Alicia Armstrong drew a bases loaded walk to cap off the scoring.
Stanford will face the winner of Northern Iowa-Tulsa in an elimination game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PT at Bowlin Stadium.
