INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - When getting a second chance it's best to take advantage of it, and that's exactly what Stanford women's rowing did at Friday's NCAA Championships. All three Cardinal boats rebounded in the afternoon repechage races to advance to Saturday's semifinals at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
Each boat will compete in one of the two six-boat championship semifinals of its class. The top three finishers in each semifinal advance to Sunday's Grand Final, while the bottom three are relegated to Sunday's Petite Final (places 7-12).
The NCAA announced schedule changes late Friday afternoon for Saturday's racing.
The I Eight leads off Saturday's action at 4:40 a.m. PT in a Pac-12-heavy semifinal, facing off against USC, UCLA, California as well as Brown and Virginia. The II Eight faces Pac-12 foes USC and Washington along with Yale, Harvard and Ohio State at 5 a.m. PT, and the Four goes up against California, Washington, Ohio State, Yale and Brown at 5:20 a.m. PT.

Friday, each of the Cardinal boats missed out on automatic qualification through the morning heats, in which the top two finishers advanced to the semifinals. The I Eight took fourth in its preliminary race, clocking a 7:08.522 that was six seconds behind second-place UCLA.
Things went better in the afternoon repechage for the boat, which powered out to the lead after the opening 1,000 meters. The race for the final two semifinal berths tightened over the third 500, with Yale taking a slight lead and the Cardinal in second less than a second ahead of Notre Dame, but Stanford would dominate the final sprint, finishing first in 7:05.096, separated from third-place Notre Dame by just less than six-tenths of a second.
The II Eight, following a third-place finish in the morning heat, seven seconds out of second, left no doubt in the afternoon repechage. The boat charged into second position from the start and pulled away with UCLA to reduce any drama over which schools would nab the two remaining semifinal spots. The Cardinal crossed the line in 7:25.449, less than five seconds back of the Bruins and over six seconds ahead of third-place Michigan.
With the top two Cardinal boats into the semifinals, it came down to the Four to make it 3-for-3. Earlier in the day the boat had finished seven seconds out of second position but bounced back well in its repechage. The Cardinal led the repechage from the start and continued adding time to its lead over the 2,000-meter course, eventually topping the field with a time of 8:07.691, three seconds ahead of second-place Michigan.
