2013 NCAA Sunday Results
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Stanford women's rowing completed competition at the 2013 NCAA Championships, finishing 10th in the team standings with 82 points.
With all boats competing in Sunday's Petite Finals, the II Eight topped the crew with a second-place finish in its race for an overall eighth-place finish. The I Eight and Four each took fourth in their respective Petite Finals for overall 10th-place finishes.
Ohio State captured the NCAA team title with 126 points, followed by California (124), Princeton (112), USC (110) and Virginia (108) rounding out the top five. The Cardinal's 82 points tied with UCLA, but the Bruins took ninth based on a higher finish in the I Eight class.
"The NCAA field was extremely competitive this year," said Stanford head coach Yasmin Farooq. "That fact was made even more obvious when only two teams in the twenty-two boat field were able to place all three boat classes in the grand finals. That said, the B finals are not where we want to be. It's a learning process for our team right now. All three of our boats improved over the weekend and the experience was invaluable. After they raced the petites I asked each boat to pull up next to the course where they could get a prime view of the grand final as it went by. I sensed a lot of people are eager for the opportunity to reach that level next year.
"I'd like to thank the seniors for their significant contributions to this team over the past four to six years," Farooq continued. "Sarah Bolmer, Claire Grover, Elise Guinee-Cooper, Julianna Kapjian-Pitt and Lindsay Meyer helped this team to numerous Pac-12 and NCAA podium finishes during their careers. Now it's time for the underclassmen to write a new chapter."
The I Eight opened its Petite Final in fourth position, where it would stay for the first half of the race. Despite falling to fifth with 500 meters to go, made a final push to pass Yale into fourth and would come in just 0.247 of a second behind Michigan for third in the race. The Cardinal's final time of 6:30.776 came in just over four seconds behind race winner UCLA (6:26.618).
In the II Eight Petite Final, the Cardinal held third position over the opening 1,500 meters before making its move on the leader, Virginia. A four-boat duel over the final 500 meters resulted in Stanford edging out Washington and Harvard by 0.022 and 0.075 of a second, respectively, for second place but coming in nearly a second and a half behind Virginia (6:32.130). Stanford's final time was 6:33.563.
Stanford's Four opened its race third before falling back into fourth position by the 1,000-meter mark. Despite a tight pack over the third 500, the Cardinal could not improve its position and finished the race fourth in 7:23.404, just under nine seconds back of California's winning time of 7:14.834.
