Sailing Blows Away Competition

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford sailing opened its season with a 40-point victory this past weekend at the 64th Nevins Trophy intersectional regatta at Kings Point, N.Y.

The Cardinal outpaced second-place Harvard (209) along with 18 other schools to claim the top spot. Oliver Toole and Carolyn Ortel played a major role in Stanford’s victory, earning 44 points after finishing first in the A-division.

Axel Sly and Michel Catania brought home a sixth-place finish in the B-division with 74 points, while Kieran Chung earned 51 points for a second-place finish in the C-division.

The Cardinal also sent a contingent to the Hatch Brown Trophy intersectional regatta and placed 13th of 18 teams, accumulating 535 points.

Antoine Screve, Kaitlyn Baab and Yuri Namikawa anchored the Cardinal in the A-division, finishing 14th with 192 points.

Stanford’s B-division team was led by Sarah Mace, Baab and Samantha Steele, and placed 13th with 183 points. The C-division team finished 10th with 160 points and was headed by Yuki Yoshiyasu, Yuri Namikawa and Steele.

In the first coaches’ poll of the year released on Sept. 18, Stanford was ranked second in the coed division with 308 points, including two first-place votes. Yale claimed the top spot with 358 points and 16 first-place ballots.

The Cardinal was ranked fifth in the women’s division with 164 points, behind Boston College (256), Dartmouth (240), Yale (239) and Navy (216).

Senior Helena Scutt, junior Hans Henken and Molly Vandemoer, wife of Stanford head coach John Vandeomoer, will compete Sept. 24-29 at the 49er and 49er FX World Championship in Marseille, France.

Vandemoer will compete in the 49er FX class as one of the top-ranked members of U.S. Sailing Team Top-Sider, and will be joined in the class by Henken and Scutt.
