WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Fran Tew scored eight minutes into the first overtime period, lifting No. 13 Stanford past No. 14 Wake Forest 1-0 on Friday afternoon.
The Cardinal (11-3, 3-1 NorPac), which entered the game having lost its only two other overtime contests this year, collected its third straight win and improved to 4-2 against nationally-ranked foes.
The Demon Deacons (8-6, 0-4 ACC) lost for the third time in four games.
The contest was evenly-matched, with both teams registering 11 shots apiece and Stanford holding a 7-6 edge in penalty corners.
Dulcie Davies made eight saves to record her third consecutive shutout and seventh on the season – matching her total number of clean-sheets from 2012. Davies’ eight saves are the second-most she has made in a game this season.
The Wake Forest offense had a strong start, recording seven shots and holding a 5-3 penalty corner in the first half. Stanford weathered the early storm and held the penalty corner advantage in the second half and outshot the Demon Deacons 3-0 in the overtime period.
Tew led all players with five attempts while Courtney Haldeman assisted the game-winner.
Stanford will look to extend its winning streak on Sunday as it takes on No. 8 Duke in Durham, N.C.
