Smooth Sailing

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford sailing raced to three top-five finishes at three regattas this weekend, including four top-five individual performances.

The Cardinal earned a fourth-place finish at the Yale Women’s regatta in New Haven, Conn., finishing with 173 points behind Yale (89), Boston College (146) and Eckerd (165). Yuki Yoshiyasu and McKenzie Wilson earned 10 top-10 finishes, including three top-five results, to place sixth in division-A.

Marion Lepert represented the Cardinal in division-B and posted 79 points to finish second to Yale with 34 points. Lepert recorded one victory and 10 top-10 results in the 20 races.

Stanford posted a fifth-place finish at the Navy Fall Intersectional regatta in Annapolis, Md., scoring 609 points. Georgetown claimed the top spot with 545 points, followed by College of Charleston (554), St. Mary’s (Md.) (604), and Harvard (605).

Kieran Chung and Yuri Namikawa sailed to a second-place finish in division-A, posting 130 points on 16 top-10 finishes, including eight results in the top-five. Mateo Vargas and Tally Buckstaff earned a first-place finish in division-B, scoring 124 points. Vargas and Buckstaff notched 15 top-10 finishes, nine top-five results and two victories.

Oliver Toole turned in 14 top-10 finishes to place eighth in division-C with 149 points, while Reinier Eenkema Van Dijk finished 13th in division-D with 206 points.

Stanford sent two teams to the Stony Burke regatta in San Francisco, Calif., where the Stanford Red team placed fourth and the Stanford Cardinal team finished 11th of 27 teams.

Stanford Red finished with 158 points, trailing Hawaii (101), UC Santa Barbara (108) and Washington (144). Lily Katz and Maeve White sailed to a fourth-place result for the Stanford Red squad, earning 63 points on eight top-10 finishes and four top-five finishes in nine races. The Cardinal finished seventh in division-B with 95 points.

The Stanford Cardinal team earned 225 points and was led by Scott Buckstaff and Vary Vangelos who placed 11th in division-A. Buckstaff and Vangelos recorded 104 points and registered four top-10 finishes. Max Kohrman and Samantha Steel finished 12th in division-B, posting 121 points on five top-10 and two top-five finishes.

Stanford will again be spread out across the country next weekend, competing at four different regattas. The Cardinal will travel to the Hoyt Trophy, Singlehanded Qualifiers, Stu Nelson and Women’s Fall Championships regattas.
