STANFORD, Calif.- Hope Burke’s team-leading eighth goal of the year lifted No. 11 Stanford to a 2-1 victory over Michigan on Friday afternoon at the Varsity Turf.
Trailing 1-0, the Cardinal (12-4, 3-1 NorPac) tied the match midway through the first half following an unassisted goal from Fran Tew at the 17:02 mark.
Stanford, which owned advantages in shots (15-5) and penalty corners (8-1), turned up the pressure in the second half to pull away. Burke’s goal came in the 56th minute when she redirected a loose ball inside the circle following a corner.
Michigan (9-7, 2-2 Big Ten) remained within striking distance mainly thanks to keeper Haley Jones’ eight saves.
Jones had a strong start to the game as well, making three saves in the first three minutes. Stanford took four shots during that span but had its momentum briefly halted by a green card given to Burke at 31:47, followed by Michigan’s lone goal less than 30 seconds later.
Despite the early deficit, the Cardinal continued to pressure the Wolverines until Tew broke through in the 18th minute with her fourth goal of the year. Positioned at the center of the cage about five yards out, the ball fell to Tew’s backhand after the initial shot attempt on a penalty corner was blocked. She fired a one-timer into the back of the cage.
Tew also played a role on the second goal, as she created the penalty corner opportunity that resulted in the Cardinal’s score. Tew received a pass at the top of the circle and weaved through two defenders before the referee whistled for a penalty corner.
Jessica Chisholm took the initial shot on a set play off the corner, a rocket that was saved by a diving Michigan goalkeeper. Jones tried to clear the ball but instead passed it directly to Burke who took advantage of the open net.
The Cardinal hosts Pacific on Monday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in match that will include a pregame senior tribute.
