Stanford Buries Beavers

STANFORD, Calif. – In a complete team effort, the sixth-ranked Stanford women’s volleyball team swept Oregon State, 25-14, 25-15, 25-19, Friday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal, which is now 57-0 all-time against OSU, moves to 15-4 on the season and 8-2 in the Pac-12, while the Beavers drop to 9-11 overall and 0-9 in the conference.

Stanford is now 8-0 at Maples Pavilion and extends its home-winning streak to 24 matches, dating back to the beginning of the 2012 season. Thirteen of the Cardinal’s 15 wins this year have come as 3-0 sweeps.

Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Burgess led the team with 10 kills and seven digs, hitting .364 in the match. Sophomore middle blocker Inky Ajanaku totaled eight kills on 10 errorless swings to hit .800, while sophomore outside hitter Brittany Howard finished with eight kills on nine attempts with no errors (.889). Redshirt junior Lydia Bai registered a season-best six kills, all in the second set.

Sophomore setter Madi Bug finished with 33 assists and eight digs for the Cardinal, while junior libero Kyle Gilbert notched a match-high 13 digs. Freshman setter Kelsey Humphreys played in two sets, racking up nine assists and two digs. Sophomore middle blocker Megan McGehee made her second start of the season, totaling five kills and two blocks, while junior opposite Morgan Boukather made her first start of the year and recorded a season-high three blocks.

Stanford captured the opening set 25-14 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Cardinal posted a .444 attack percentage, while holding the Beavers to a .091 clip. Senior Carly Wopat led the way with four kills on six swings and no errors. Howard added four kills and five digs, while Burgess tallied three kills and two digs. Freshman Lila Toner led Oregon State with four kills.

The Cardinal took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 win in the second set. Stanford hit .500 (14-2-24) and recorded three blocks. OSU committed nine attack errors and posted a .059 hitting percentage in the set. Bai registered six kills to lead the Stanford offense, while Burgess and senior Rachel Williams tallied three each. Junior Arica Nassar totaled five kills to lead the Beavers.

Stanford sealed the win with a 25-19 victory in the third set. The Cardinal registered 20 kills on 38 attempts with just three errors to post a .447 attack percentage. OSU hit .250 in the set. Ajanaku led Stanford with six kills, while Burgess, Howard and McGehee all tallied four kills. Gilbert posted eight digs to lead the defense. Nassar finished with 10 kills to lead the Beavers.

Stanford remains on The Farm next week, hosting No. 4 USC and UCLA on Wednesday, Oct. 30 and Friday, Nov. 1, respectively. Wednesday’s match is Breast Cancer Awareness Night, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support. Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
