FOSTER CITY, Calif. – The Stanford women’s rowing team won gold in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8+ at the Head of the Lagoon in Foster City, Calif. on Sunday.
The Cardinal was the top boat among the 11 in the race, posting a time of 20:38 for the win. The time was nearly one minute faster than Sacramento State’s 21:20. Stanford has now won the Novice 8+ in each of its two attempts this fall season, also winning at the Head of the American.
“I think our boat did a really great job today,” said freshman Reilly Hayes. “We had a few walk-ons mixed with a few freshmen and we did a great job coming together to race how we wanted to.”
On Sunday it was Rachael Stryer guiding the boat from the coxswain seat. She was joined by Hayes, Emmie Kehoe, Cynthia Nelson, Dani Lucas and four new walk-ons Bridget Hill, Julia Howell, Elisa Graue and Skye Mooney.
“It went really well,” said Stryer. “We really just met some of the walk-ons and threw them in. They did an amazing job keeping up. We are really excited about the spring because they did a great job and everybody came together.”
The second Stanford boat in the race finished fifth with a time of 23:11. It was entirely made up of walk-ons besides the coxswain Amanda Coopersmith. The newcomers included Julia Vazquez, Louise Lu, Emily Walck, Allie Koscove, Patricia Perozo, Elizabeth Margolin, Morgan Mahlock and Lauren Joseph.
The Head of the Lagoon concluded Stanford’s fall season. The spring season will begin with the Pac-12 Women’s Challenge March 29-30 in Redwood Shores, Calif.
