Return of the Mat

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford wrestling team opened the 2013-14 campaign with dual wins over Cal Baptist (29-12) and Menlo College (37-6), Saturday, in Burnham Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.

Stanford won seven of the 10 bouts against Cal Baptist and eight of the 10 against Menlo College. Posting two wins on the day were redshirt senior Ryan Mango, redshirt freshman Jim Wilson, senior Kyle Meyer and redshirt freshman Josh Marchok.

Mango, ranked third nationally at 133 pounds, posted a 14-10 decision over Cal Baptist’s Cody Tow to open the season. The St. Louis, Mo., native then recorded a technical fall (20-4) in 5:23 against Menlo’s Juan Zorilla. At 165 pounds, Wilson registered his first career fall against CBU’s Anthony Ballinger in 3:45, and then pulled out a 4-2 sudden victory win against Menlo’s Eric Lopez.

Meyer turned in an 11-3 major decision against CBU’s Kenneth Tribble at 174 pounds. He then wrestled up at 184 pounds against Menlo’s Paul Bracamonte and recorded an 18-3 (7:00) technical fall. Heavyweight Josh Marchok opened his collegiate career with an 8-2 decision versus Paul Yoo of Cal Baptist before staving off Menlo’s Scott Brasil, 10-8.

Also recording wins for the Cardinal against Cal Baptist was senior captain Donovan Halpin. He shut out Miguel Gallegos 9-0 for the major decision at 149 pounds. Another senior captain, Dan Scherer, registered a fall in 2:32 against Mark Jordenson at 197 pounds to give the Cardinal six team points. Sophomore 125-pounder Evan Silver, ranked No. 19 in the nation, capped off the Stanford scoring with an 11-5 decision against Bryden Lazaro.

Against Menlo College, senior Alan Yen (197 pounds) and redshirt freshman Zach Nevills both recorded falls for Stanford, coming in 4:27 and 4:43, respectively. Sophomore 133-pounder Peter Russo also turned in a fall for the Cardinal, pinning Menlo’s Steele Escobedo in 1:57. Redshirt freshman Peter Galli added a 4-1 decision over Christian Franks at 157 pounds.

Up next, Stanford will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Air Force on Sunday, Nov. 10 at Noon PT.
