Stanford-LMU Quotes

NCAA Tournament First Round
Cagan Stadium - Stanford, Calif.
Stanford 1, Loyola Marymount 1 (Stanford advances 3-2 on penalties)

Stanford Head Coach Jeremy Gunn

On thematch:

“I think we’ve been playing great all through the season but obviously as it gets later into the season you do get into a bit more of a groove in how you go about things. The special things that are happening now I think just continue to lead. Tonight we played fantastic. We could’ve, should’ve, would’ve been up in the game, and suddenly we’re behind I didn’t think we deserved to be. In a knockout game like that you can feel sorry for yourself and give up or you can keep going, and the boys kept going. We put them under so much pressure and had them on the ropes, their keeper made great saves."

"In a game of soccer you want to score goals and you want to keep their keeper busy and we really did that tonight. The spirit and the drive of the team was absolutely immense. We’ve had some things go against us, but one of these games we might score five. But we kept going and I felt through regulation we were on the front foot, in overtime we were on the front foot. They’re a good team and you always knew they could be a threat on the counterattack, but I thought we kept them pretty quiet for the most part.”

On the performance of Drew Hutchins:

“I’m trying to think of how many big saves Drew made. I’ve seen a keeper score on corners in the final 10 seconds before. Drew’s one of many tremendous young men. Last year we needed coverage at center back and we played him a few games at center back and he did great. He’s just one of those special people. And to win the flick-on and create the tying goal, he almost had another assist. He was great on the penalties, a big presence and we actually didn’t tell him until tonight that he was in the first five.”

Stanford senior goalkeeper Drew Hutchins

On thematch:

“We had the lion’s share of possession, and almost all the shots in the game. I think I only had one save leading up to the goal. Hat’s off to number 16, he hit a good ball but as a goalkeeper you hate to give up any ball near post. After that I had to right the wrong in some way. [On the goal] Bobby made a great throw, I flicked it on and Zach, he had no right finishing that ball, it was a great finish. It was no tap-in. That was awesome.”

“Their goalkeeper was awesome in PKs, I think he guessed right on every one. But we had a few guys bury it.”

On extending his collegiate career by at least one more match:

“I’m going into every game with that thought of it could be my last game, which is great motivation,” Hutchins said after Thursday’s match. “After we got that goal there was belief in the team that there was no way we were losing this one.”

On the second-round matchup against Cal State Northridge:

“It’s a lot of fun at the end. I know they’re an excellent team, We’ve heard a lot about them. I haven’t played them in my four years here, so we’ll see what they’ve got."
