Cardinal Splits in Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 23 Stanford wrestling team upset No. 17 Michigan, 21-13, in Ann Arbor, before falling at Eastern Michigan, 18-16, Sunday in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Cardinal is now 5-1 on the season, while the Wolverines drop to 2-2 and the Eagles move to 5-1.

The Cardinal posted wins in six of the 10 bouts against Michigan to win its fifth straight dual meet of the year. Redshirt freshman Jim Wilson, ranked No. 20, posted the day’s largest upset with a 6-3 decision over sixth-ranked Dan Yates at 165. No. 17 Evan Silver also defeated a higher-ranked opponent with a 4-3 decision over No. 11 Conor Youtsey at 125 pounds.

Senior Bret Baumbach was the only Cardinal to score bonus points against the Wolverines, pinning Jake Salazar in 2:52 at 157 pounds. Third-ranked Ryan Mango recorded a 10-5 decision over Rossi Bruno at 133 pounds. Seniors Kyle Meyer (174 pounds) and Dan Scherer (197 pounds) also tallied wins for Stanford against Michigan.

The Stanford-Eastern Michigan dual came down to the final bout, where Phillip Joseph secured a pin over Stanford sophomore Thomas Kimbrell in 1:59 at 184 pounds to win it for the Eagles.

Redshirt freshman Josh Marchok (285 pounds) and Mango notched wins early on for the Cardinal to keep the dual tied at 6-6 after the first four bouts. After the Eagles took a 9-6 lead with a decision at 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Maxwell Hvolbek registered a 10-2 major decision to give the Cardinal the slight lead.

Redshirt freshman Peter Galli posted a 4-3 decision over Brandon Zeerip at 157 pounds and Wilson collected his second decision of the day to give Stanford the 16-9 advantage. However, redshirt freshman Zach Nevills fell 4-3 to Mike Curby at 174 pounds before Kimbrell was pinned, marking the first loss of the year for the Cardinal.

Stanford completes its trip to the state of Michigan on Monday, Nov. 25 with a dual at Central Michigan at 4:30 p.m. PT. Head coach Jason Borrelli will square off against his alma mater and his father, Tom, who is the head coach of the Chippewas.
