Cardinal Takes Out CMU

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – In the battle of father versus son, Stanford head coach Jason Borrelli and the No. 23 Cardinal defeated his father, Tom, and the No. 25 Central Michigan Chippewas, 18-13, Monday at McGurik Arena in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Stanford improves to 6-1 overall with three of its six wins on the year coming against top-25 opponents.

Stanford captured wins in six of the 10 bouts against Central Michigan (2-2), avenging a 33-3 loss it suffered last season on The Farm.

The Cardinal jumped out to a 9-0 lead on the Chippewas as sophomore Thomas Kimbrell (184 pounds), senior Dan Scherer (197 pounds) and redshirt freshman Josh Marchok (285 pounds) all posted decisions for Stanford.

Central Michigan got on the board at 125 pounds where Corey Keener registered an 11-4 decision over Stanford freshman Tommy Pawelski. Redshirt senior Ryan Mango, ranked No. 3 nationally, answered with a 5-3 decision over No. 14 Joe Roth at 133 pounds.

The Chippewas cut the Cardinal lead to 12-10 after No. 17 Zach Horan tallied a major decision against sophomore Peter Russo at 141 pounds and Scott Mattingly collected a 7-1 decision against redshirt freshman Maxwell Hvolbek. However, decisions by senior Bret Baumbach (157 pounds) and No. 20 Jim Wilson (165 pounds) sealed the win for Stanford.

The Cardinal returns to The Farm to host the Stanford Duals on Saturday, Nov. 30 starting at 11 a.m. PT. Stanford will take on Pac-12 foe CSU Bakersfield, No. 9 Nebraska and Utah Valley in Burnham Pavilion.
