Stanford Falls to Chattanooga

STANFORD, Calif. – After a three-week hiatus for finals, the 15th-ranked Stanford wrestling team dropped a 25-13 dual meet decision to visiting Chattanooga, Friday, at Burnham Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal falls to 8-3 on the season, while the Mocs improved to 6-4.

Stanford won just three of the 10 bouts, but scored bonus points in two of them as sophomore Evan Silver posted a major decision and redshirt freshman Josh Marchok registered a fall. Top-ranked redshirt senior Ryan Mango (133 pounds) and 14th-ranked redshirt freshman Jim Wilson (165 pounds) both suffered their first losses of the season.

Silver opened the dual with a 15-3 major decision over Campbell Lewis at 125 pounds to improve to 9-2 on the year. He registered five takedowns, three near fall points, an escape and racked up 3:56 of riding time in the win.

The Mocs recorded wins in the next seven bouts to take a commanding 25-4 lead in the dual. Mango trailed UTC’s Nick Soto 11-3 going into the third period, where he chose to start in the neutral position. He quickly secured a takedown and tacked on three near fall points to cut Soto’s lead to 11-8, but was held off late in the period.

UTC took the dual lead for good at 141 pounds. Stanford true freshman Tommy Pawelski, who was wrestling up two weight classes, fell 9-0 to Mike Pongracz.

In one of the most competitive bouts of the night, Wilson dropped a 4-2 decision to seventh-ranked Corey Mock at 165 pounds. Trailing 3-1 in the third period, Wilson was awarded a point for a stalling call on Mock, who had secured 1:00 of riding time. Wilson went in on a shot late in the period, but was unable to finish it out before time expired.

Senior Dan Scherer stopped the bleeding for the Cardinal at 197 pounds. The St. Louis, Mo., native shut out Scottie Boykin with a 6-0 decision. After neither wrestler scored in the first period, Scherer chose down to start the second where he recorded an escape and then a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Boykin chose to start in the neutral position in the third and Scherer notched another takedown to go with 2:27 of riding time. He improves to 5-1 overall on the season.

Marchok completed the scoring for Stanford with a fall in 3:54, his fastest of the season, over Moc junior heavyweight Kevin Malone. It is the third fall of the season for the rookie who moved to 11-5 overall and 8-3 in duals.

Stanford closes out 2013 at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 22.
