Sweet Sixteen Bound

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 3 Stanford women’s volleyball team completed its 21st sweep of the season with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 win over Oklahoma, Friday, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal, which has now won 11 consecutive matches, improves to 26-5 overall, while the Sooners finish the season 24-8.

Stanford advances to its 11th Sweet Sixteen under head coach John Dunning, who is in his 13th season at the helm of the program. The Cardinal boasts a nation-best 103 NCAA Tournament victories all-time.

Stanford outhit Oklahoma .215 to .097, while doubling up on the Sooners in the block column with 10. It is the 17th time this season the Cardinal has registered double-digit blocks as a team.

Sophomore setter Madi Bugg finished with 38 assists and moved past Katie Goldhahn (2002-05) for 10th place on the Cardinal’s all-time assists list (2,210).

Senior Carly Wopat recorded five blocks against the Sooners to become just the third player in Cardinal history to reach the 600 career block plateau. She now has 603 joining sisters Kim Oden (665) and Bev Oden (650).

Sophomore Brittany Howard led Stanford in the match with 11 kills and 17 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Sophomore middle blocker Inky Ajanaku finished with 11 kills on a .421 attack percentage to go with five blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Burges and senior Rachel Williams added seven kills apiece for the Cardinal. Junior libero Kyle Gilbert tallied 15 digs.

For Oklahoma, Kierra Holst and Sallie McLaurin led the Sooners with nine kills apiece. Libero Taylor Migliazzo finished with a match-high 22 digs.

Stanford will travel to Lexington, Ky., to play in the Lexington Regional, Dec. 13-14. The Cardinal will face either Pac-12 foe Colorado or No. 10 seed Minnesota in the Sweet Sixteen.
