SAN FRANCISCO – The Stanford wrestling team defeated San Francisco State, 33-8, Saturday, in San Francisco. The Cardinal moves to 13-4 overall, tying for the second-most dual wins in program history.
Freshman Tommy Pawelski opened the dual with a 10-0 major decision over Marc Collier at 125 pounds. He registered a takedown and two near fall points in the opening period. He tacked on three points in the second with an escape and a takedown. Pawelski tallied his third takedown of the bout in the third period and finished with 3:13 of riding time. He moves to 18-12 on the year.
The Gators took the lead at 133 pounds as Isaiah Hurtado posted a 20-4 technical fall over Stanford freshman Eric Cramer, who was wrestling up at weight for the Cardinal. Sophomore Peter Russo then dropped a 7-4 decision to Dylan Phillipy at 141 pounds to give San Francisco State an 8-4 lead in the dual.
Senior Donovan Halpin cut into the Gators’ lead with a 6-1 decision over Conrad Snell at 149 pounds. Halpin led 2-1 after the first period. Snell chose to start in the down position to start the second where Halpin remained on top for the entire two minutes. Halpin added an escape and another takedown to go with 1:47 of riding time. The win marked his 10th of the season for the Petaluma, Calif., native.
Senior Bret Baumbach regained the lead for Stanford with a 9-0 major decision against Tavis Ino at 157 pounds. Baumbach took a 2-0 lead in the first with a late takedown. He then tallied an escape, another takedown and was awarded a point for stalling on Ino. Baumbach finished him off with a third takedown in the final period and 2:33 of riding time. The Council Bluffs, Iowa native improves to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in duals.
Wrestling up a weight, redshirt freshman Peter Galli recorded his first major decision win of the year, 9-1 over Vincente Aboytes at 165 pounds. Leading 5-0 going into the third period, Galli tacked on two more takedowns to get the major. He improves to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in duals this season.
Senior Kyle Meyer then registered his first fall of the season, and just the second of his career, to increase the Cardinal lead to 21-8. Meyer earned the takedown midway through the first period and then secured the fall at 2:31. The win moves him to 19-10 on the year and 10-4 in duals.
Sophomore Tommy Kimbrell added to Stanford’s lead with a 2-1 decision over Zach Jimenez at 184 pounds. After no score in the first period, Kimbrell chose to start in the down position in the second where he recorded an escape. He then racked up 1:36 of riding time before yielding an escape to Jimenez in the third. Kimbrell improves to 17-11 on the year.
Senior Dan Scherer notched his fastest fall of the season, pinning Jesse Campos in 1:25 to move to 15-3 overall and 10-2 in duals. Ranked 19th nationally, Scherer now has five falls on the year.
Redshirt freshman heavyweight Josh Marchok finished things off for the Cardinal with a 5-1 decision over Hildelv Manzur. Tied in the final period, Marchok registered a takedown and two quick near fall points for the win. He moves to 14-9 overall and 11-5 in duals.
Stanford’s next competitions will take place on Monday, Feb. 3 as the Cardinal faces Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz., and Arizona State in Tempe. Stanford’s dual at ASU will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks at 5 p.m. PT.
