Two Big Wins on Day One

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Stanford fencing team is halfway through the Northwestern Duals after competing in 13 dual matches between the men’s and women’s teams on Saturday.

The No. 10 Cardinal men’s team went 3-3 on Saturday, including big wins over No. 3 Princeton (14-13) and No. 4 Notre Dame (15-12). Stanford fell in top-10 matchups with No. 6 Ohio State (20-7) and No. 8 Penn (17-10). The other two matches on the first day of the event were a win over Wayne State (21-6) and loss to North Carolina (15-12).

Leading the way for the men’s squad was sophomore Alexander Massialas in foil, who lost just twice on the day while posting a 13-2 record. Also recording double-digit wins was freshman Ben Riviere in epee with a 10-8 ledger. Junior Paul Riviere and senior Jake Harbour each notched nine wins in epee on the day.

The women’s team posted a record of 4-3 for the day. Stanford went 4-0 against unranked teams, but lost all three contests against top-10 foes. The wins were against North Carolina (16-11), Fairleigh Dickinson (18-9), Duke (18-9) and Wayne State (17-10). The losses came to No. 1 Princeton (22-5), No. 3 Notre Dame (20-7) and No. 5 Ohio State (20-7).

Senior Francesca Bassa was the top fencer on the day for the women’s team. She tallied 18 wins in her 21 epee matches. Right behind her was fellow epee fencer sophomore Vivian Kong with a 17-4 mark. Freshman Alexa Rohan had a great day for the sabre team with a 16-5 record.

Day two of the Northwestern Duals will begin at 8 a.m. (CT) at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion. The Stanford women’s team will face Penn, Tufts, Temple, UC San Diego, Detroit Mercy and Lawrence. The men’s team is slated to go up against Duke, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence, UC San Diego and Northwestern.
