PULLMAN, Wash.- Anthony Brown scored a career-high 30 points, fueling Stanford past Washington State 69-56 on Saturday afternoon to sweep the season series for the first time since 2008.
Stanford (16-8, 7-5 Pac-12) led throughout the entire game, racing out to a 39-24 halftime lead and shooting 43.9 percent overall. The Cardinal did the bulk of its damage from the foul line, led by Brown’s 10-11 performance.
Chasson Randle added 14 points for Stanford, which earned its third conference road split and improved to 7-1 in games following a loss.
Josh Huestis scored seven points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, as Stanford held a 36-32 edge on the glass. Huestis also tallied two blocks, increasing his career total to 166 to creep within one swat of Tim Young’s school record of 167.
Washington State (9-16, 2-11 Pac-12), which lost for the eighth time in nine games, was limited to 31.4 percent shooting and made 9-29 from long range.
Brown scored 20 of his points in the first half, finishing 6-6 from the field while equaling his season-high total of four three-pointers. The Cardinal shot 63.2 percent over the game’s first 20 minutes, reaching its biggest lead at 37-21 following a pair of free throws from Brown.
Stanford’s offense sputtered in the second half, converting only 6-22 from the field and missing all nine of its three-point attempts. However, the defense continued to hold Washington State in check, as the Cougars shot 31.0 percent and missed 16 of their 20 opportunities from long distance.
A 14-6 scoring run midway through the second period allowed Washington State to trim the deficit to 47-42 following the first of two free throws from Jordan Railey.
Free throws from Randle and Brown over the last three minutes iced the win for Stanford.
Stanford returns to Maples Pavilion this week, hosting USC on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
