Victories In The Valley

DAVIS, Calif. – Second-ranked Stanford racked up wins at Pacific and No. 14 UC Davis on a well-traveled Saturday.

The Cardinal (7-0) opened the day making the trip along I-580, I-205 and I-5 to Stockton where it downed Pacific, 15-4, then hopped back on the I-5 “rocket launcher” to I-80 where in Davis it collected a 17-5 evening win over the Aggies.

Senior Annika Dries scored nine goals over the two wins, capped off by a perfect 6-for-6 shooting effort in the nightcap against the Aggies. Freshman Dani Jackovich scored four times in the afternoon against Pacific and on the day netted five goals, as did junior Ashley Grossman. Their scoring highlighted a day in which a total of 10 Cardinal players found the back of the cage.

On the defensive side of the tank, all three of Stanford’s goalies saw action. Gabby Stone, Emily Dorst and Julia Hermann combined to make 17 saves over the two games.

The Cardinal scored 13 straight goals before Pacific could muster an answer in the first game of the day. Dries scored twice in the opening frame while Grossman, Jackovich, Maggie Steffens and Anna Yelizarova each added a goal as Stanford went up 6-0 after the opening frame.

Stanford would score six more times in the second period, with Jackovich and Kiley Neushul each scoring twice. Melena Masson opened the second half with a goal that made it 13-0 before Pacific’s Taylor Adair broke the shutout with 5:20 remaining in the period. Jackovich and Sophia Monaghan would answer with Stanford’s final two goals of the game, followed by Pacific netting three straight to make for the final line.

Dorst made eight saves and allowed just two goals over three periods of action, with Hermann, the freshman, coming on for the fourth period and making a save.

The Cardinal then loaded up the bus and rolled out, moving north to Davis. As in the day’s opener, Stanford pushed its lead to double digits before its opponent could answer, going up 10-0 after 16:16 of action. Again it was Dries and Grossman providing the start, as they evenly split Stanford’s four goals in the first period. Cory and Kaley Dodson opened the scoring in the second frame with Monaghan, Grossman and Jamie Neushul adding goals as the Cardinal took a 9-0 lead into the break.

Dries netted a 6-on-5 score 16 seconds into the second half before Allyson Hansen got the Aggies on the board with 7:17 to go in the third period. Dries and Monaghan answered to make it 13-1 Cardinal before the Aggies put together a modest three-goal spurt thanks to a pair of goals from Alex Rawlinson and one from Elsie Fullerton.

Dries, Rachel Johnson and Jackovich would account for Stanford’s final three goals in the contest.

Stone started the game and made six saves over the first three periods before Hermann handled the final frame, stopping a pair of shots.
