TEMPE, Ariz. – It was a day of dominating performances by No. 22/20 Stanford, which scored 21 runs and held Indiana and Western Michigan scoreless.
The Cardinal (5-0) has outscored opponents 47-5 during its opening weekend at the Kajikawa Classic.
Stanford began the day with a convincing 9-0 win over Indiana (1-2). Jessica Plaza led Stanford offensively, going 3-3 with two home runs and a single. Carley Hoover (2-0) was dominant in the circle, striking out seven of 14 batters faced and allowing one hit and two walks over four innings.
Hanna Winter, Kayla Bonstrom and Bessie Noll had a strong game at the plate, each going 2-3 and accounting for four runs.
Stanford got on the board early with Winter reaching on a single and stealing a base, followed by an RBI-single by Bonstrom.
The Cardinal continued to apply the pressure in the second inning with a leadoff double from Noll, followed by a triple by Erin Ashby and a single by Plaza. Winter kept the inning going with a double, while Bonstrom added a single to give Stanford five runs and four hits on the inning.
Plaza delivered her first home run on the season in the third, while Kylie Sorenson hammered the first home of her collegiate career – a two-run shot to dead-center – in the fourth. Plaza added the Cardinal’s final run in the fifth inning with her second home run on the day.
Stanford continued to roll in its second game, earning a 15-0 victory over Western Michigan (1-3). Madi Schreyer (3-0) and Nyree White combined for a no-hitter, pitching five shutout innings.
Schreyer retired all nine batters faced in three innings and notched three strikeouts. White tallied one strikeout and allowed one walk in two innings of work.
Ashby had a great game offensively, going 3-3 with three singles, an RBI and two runs. Sorenson, Noll, Cassandra Roulund and Tylyn Wells tallied two hits apiece.
After being held scoreless in the first inning, the Cardinal scored three runs in the second, highlighted by a big two-run home run by Roulund.
Stanford exploded for seven runs on six hits in the third inning – the third time in five games the Cardinal recorded seven or more runs in a single inning.
Stanford rallied for five runs in the fourth to stretch its lead to 15 and secure the victory.
Stanford will conclude its weekend of competition Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against Seattle University.
