FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Maya DiRado and Katie Olsen continued their winning ways during the final day of the Pac-12 Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships to lead Stanford to a second-place finish Saturday night. DiRado won her third race of the four-day meet and Olsen claimed her second as the Cardinal placed in the top two for the fifth consecutive year.
"What a great way to finish the meet with Katie and Maya winning indiviudal titles and Mackenzie Stein going a time fast enough to make NCAAs," said head coach Greg Meehan. "We are looking forward to getting this group some much needed rest as we prepare for Minneapolis."
Stein was second in the B final of the 100 fly (53.18) and fifth in the A final of the 200 fly (1:56.14), an event that DiRado won as part of back-to-back Cardinal victories.
Annemarie Thayer was eighth in the 200 back with a 1:55.96 and Lia Neal earned a second-place finish in the 100 free with Stanford’s third-best time in program history (47.53) to start things off, before DiRado and Olsen gave Stanford its two wins of the day.
Olsen became the Cardinal’s first double winner in both breaststroke events since Tara Kirk in 2004 by touching the wall in 2:08.39 in the 200 breast. Her time ranks No. 3 in Stanford history, behind only Tara Kirk (2004, 2:07.13) and Liz Smith (2010, 2:07.50).
DiRado followed Olsen by winning the 200 fly in a career-best 1:53.60. The finishing mark is tied for fourth in Cardinal history and made DiRado the first triple winner since Julia Smit in 2010. She overcame Noelle Tarazona of UCLA, who had qualified in first, to finish more than one second ahead of the field.
The senior DiRado, who now owns six individual Pac-12 titles, had previously claimed the 200 and 400 IMs over the last two days of the meet.
After Lilly Hinrichs earned fourth-place in the platform diving competition (298.35), Stanford concluded the meet by taking third in the 400 free relay. Maddy Schaefer, DiRado, Felicia Lee and Lia Neal combined for a 3:12.55.
Stanford and the rest of the conference takes part in the Pac-12 Invitational tomorrow. The NCAA Zone diving meet is schedule for March 13-15 and the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships will be March 20-22 in Minneapolis, Minn.
