Leaving No Doubt

LAS VEGAS - Behind Chasson Randle’s 21 points, Stanford cruised past Arizona State 79-58 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Pac-12 Tournament at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.

Dwight Powell chipped in with 15 points on 6-8 shooting, all coming in the second half, while Josh Huestis finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Anthony Brown added 11 points and six boards while John Gage came off the bench to contribute eight points.

Stanford has reached the conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 2010. The Cardinal and Bruins will be hooking up in the postseason for the first time since 2008, when UCLA clipped Stanford 67-64 in the championship game.

“I think we beat a good team tonight. I thought our guys came out and played right from the start, and I think we continued for 40 minutes,” said head coach Johnny Dawkins.

The Cardinal (21-11) converted seven consecutive field goals in the second half, translating into a 23-8 run and a 71-52 lead. Stanford, which never trailed in the game, shot 54.9 percent from the field and held a 34-23 edge in rebounds. The Cardinal is the only team to beat the Sun Devils twice this season.

“We put everything together on both ends of the floor,” added Dawkins. “You give them credit. They're a tough team. They made runs at us, but our guys showed a lot of poise, a lot of maturity. They withstood the runs and were able to build momentum.”

Jonathan Gilling led Arizona State (21-11) with 13 points, thanks to a 4-9 clip from three-point territory. Jahii Carson and Jermaine Marshall, the Sun Devils’ leading scorers, were both held scoreless in the first half.

Stanford advances to the semifinals Friday and will face No. 2 seed UCLA (24-8) at 8:30 p.m. PT on Fox Sports 1.
