STANFORD, Calif. – Eight Stanford players combined for 14 hits Tuesday to help the Cardinal earn a convincing 8-0 victory in five innings against Santa Clara.
Stanford (27-18, 3-12 Pac-12) utilized a balanced offensive approach in which eight players recorded at least one hit and five players registered multi-hit games. Leah White led the Cardinal offensively, going 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and three RBI.
Kylie Sorenson, Erin Ashby, Cassandra Roulund and Tylyn Wells recorded two hits apiece.
Madi Schreyer (19-10) was excellent in the circle for the Cardinal, holding Santa Clara (7-27, 2-4 WCC) batters to three hits and one walk, while striking out three in 5.0 shutout innings.
The Cardinal got on the board early, posting three runs in the second inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, White singled up the middle to bring in two runs. Kayla Bonstrom followed with a grounder to second that the Broncos fielder was unable to handle, scoring another Cardinal run.
After scoreless third and fourth innings, Sorenson got a rally going in the fifth with a leadoff single. Ashby and Roulund followed with back-to-back singles, with the latter scoring Sorenson and giving the Cardinal a 4-0 advantage.
Hanna Winter picked up a hit with runners on first and second, and a fielding error by Santa Clara’s shortstop allowed another run to score on the play. Kaitlin Schaberg drew a walk in the next at-bat to load the bases.
Tylyn Wells stepped to the plate and singled to advance the runners and extend the Cardinal’s lead to 6-0. White followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Winter from third.
A walk to Bonstrom loaded the bases and Sorenson stepped to the plate for the second time in the inning. Sorenson delivered the same result as her first at-bat with a single, giving the Cardinal an 8-0 run-rule victory.
It is the fourth consecutive game Stanford defeated Santa Clara by run-rule dating back to the 2012 season.
Stanford will play host to No. 1/1 Oregon for a three-game series this weekend, beginning Friday at 7 p.m. (PT). Friday’s game will be televised on ESPNU.
