OJAI, Calif.- No. 27 Stanford dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 49 Oregon on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Pac-12 Championships.
Stanford (14-5, 5-2 Pac-12) entered the match having won five in a row while enjoying a 25-spot climb in the national rankings over three weeks. Four victories over top-40 opponents, highlighted by last weekend’s upset of No. 16 California, should likely be enough to earn an NCAA berth, but the Cardinal must wait until Tuesday’s selection show.
Awarded the tournament’s No. 3 seed after finishing third in the conference, Stanford was upended by No. 7 seed Oregon, which won its second match in consecutive days after defeating No. 6 seed Washington on Wednesday.
The Ducks (17-8, 1-6 Pac-12) also avenged an earlier loss, as the Cardinal posted a 4-2 victory in the regular-season meeting at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Stanford claimed a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point for only the second time in five matches. The decider was an 8-6 victory from Yale Goldberg and Trey Strobel at the No. 3 spot.
Oregon tied the match at 1-1 following a 6-3, 6-4 triumph from Daniel Sardu over Nolan Paige at the No. 4 spot.
Anthony Tsodikov then put Stanford ahead 2-1 thanks to a 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory over Joey Swaysland on court five.
But the Ducks countered with three consecutive three-set victories, with Robin Cambier providing the clincher against John Morrissey 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 position.
