Brown Runs to Impressive Win

BERKELEY, Calif. – Stanford sophomore Hannah Brown showed the form that won her five Virginia state high school championships by capturing the women’s 800 meters at the Brutus Hamilton Open at Edwards Stadium on Friday.

Brown set a personal collegiate best by three seconds to win in 2:09.73, her fastest time in three years, and earn her first collegiate victory. Brown was among four Stanford athletes to win Friday, though two are redshirting and competing unattached.

Lucas Rowley represented Stanford in winning the discus with a throw of 165-5. A pair of Cardinal freshmen also won, though not while representing Stanford: Thomas Rigby won the men’s 800 in 1:54.12 and Carla Forbes won the women’s triple jump in 38-10 ½.

Also impressive was freshman Vanessa Fraser, who continued her impressive running since making her collegiate debut at the Stanford Invitational early this month. Fraser was runner-up in the 1,500 while running 4:30.05, a personal best. Her previous 1,500 best was 4:34.10, converted from her best high school 1,600 time.

Stanford returns to Berkeley on Saturday for the Brutus Hamilton Challenge, invitational events that begin at 10 a.m. at Edwards Stadium.
